Nevada Alum Cody Fajardo Wins Grey Cup MVP

The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League won the 110th edition of the Grey Cup over the weekend. Montreal was a heavy underdog to win their first championship since 2010.

The Alouettes were led by a name that Mountain West fans may remember in former Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo.

Fajardo was a four-year starter at Nevada from 2011 to 2015. Fajardo finished his college career with over 9,000 yards passing and over 3,000 yards rushing, an extremely rare feat in the FBS. He was also WAC Freshman of the Year for the 2011 season.

Fajardo completed 21 of 26 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

The 31-year-old engineered the game-winning drive in the final two minutes. Fajardo threw a 19-yard touchdown pass at the end of a seven-play, 83-yard drive to end his first season with Montreal.

"Nobody expected us to be in the game, Fajardo told the Montreal Gazette. "Nobody expected us to win the game, except for the one per cent in that locker room. That’s what bonded us the entire year."

Montreal won their final eight games of the season, including playoff games, to clinch the title. 

Fajardo won his first Grey Cup in 2017 as a backup and situational quarterback with the Toronto Argonauts.
